They prevent the reverse flow of gas back through the hose toward the tanks. This is a necessary safety measure since most cutting torches as sold without check valves on them to make the price more attractive. These are "B" sized check valves for 3 16, 1 4, 5 16 and 3 8 twin welding hose.
