Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina diarist 199 and Drawing Nov 25Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina, 1862 1867. Fort Sumter was the place where the opening shots of the American Civil War were fired, on 12 April 1861. The following day the Union garrison surrendered. The Confederacy then held the fort until 17 February 1865.
