Victorian Maid Posing in Studio Watercolor British and also to religious iconographyPart of what I love about this watercolor is that is feels a bit transgressive it looks to me, with unframed pictures hung on the wall all around her, as if our maid may have stolen away to an artist's studio to pose for a portrait. Or else our subject was dressed up as in a maid's uniform and is playing the part of a servant taking a break from her duties, which is its own particular thing. Whatever the case, I really like the tensions inherent in
