What makes them most distinctive and interesting to me--in addition to the elaborate framework he constructed around them--are the backgrounds that set them off

with a bit of yellow paint near where the handle meets the head

the map depicts the North Branch coal mine in Garrett County

Maybe even a sort of family tree

with some wear to the wood and finish and  a couple of white spots near the center of one side

It was someone known, though, and has the feel of a New Yorker cartoon to me, perhaps just in wait of the perfect caption! Great from cap to shoes I think, especially all that ink drawn pattern, and seems like a nice one to hang either in the dressing room, to inspire efforts toward dapperness, or near the front door to inspire preparedness for
